Jack Phillips and Phil Gardner faced a pair of hurdles when starting their research company, the Institute for Applied Network Security, in 2001. They broke away from the tradition of reports based on surveys, and they didn’t want to share ownership with outside investors. Their initial investment of $16,000 has grown into a $2.9 million company as of last year. Revenue should hit $3.3 million for 2008. Today known simply as IANS, the Boston company sells its research to companies looking to buy information security products.
