Pushing the Envelope: Establishing a Proactive Security Architecture

with Peter Kuper and Phil Gardner

When COVID hit, many InfoSec leaders were struck by the realization that their organizations weren’t agile or sophisticated enough to quickly adapt – many had critical VPN/remote access upgrades on the wish list, but languishing on the back burner. The problem: CISOs lacked the flexibility needed to take a more proactive approach to problem solving and got stuck buying more of the same less effective solutions. In this session, IANS CEO Phil Gardner and IANS Faculty member Peter Kuper will address three key tactics CISOs can use to build a more adaptable program:

  • Outsource: Failure to prioritize fuels the repeated failure to address systemic problems. Effective outsourcing of the “easy” reduces management overhead to free time for executing against strategic prioritization.
  • Gain telemetry: You can’t manage what you can’t measure, and Excel sheets aren’t getting the job done. Visualizations are improving – from CMDB to context-deep reporting – and you can use that data to eliminate blind spots and build a case for recommendations to management.
  • Innovate: The big vendors have always struggled to stay ahead of the hackers. Identifying effective emerging vendors who are off the attackers’ radar can give you an edge.

Kuper will provide practical guidance on how to employ these three strategies, leaving you with perspective on how build on the lessons emerging in COVID’s aftermath.
